Why Summer Is an Underrated Season for Engagement Photos

Summer sometimes gets a bad reputation online. Brides worry about heat, harsh light, or feeling rushed. But the truth is: summer is one of the best seasons for engagement photos when you plan them well.

One of the biggest advantages? The days are longer.

Longer days mean later sunsets, which gives us far more flexibility. You’re not racing the clock after work. You’re not squeezing photos into a narrow window. You have space to breathe, and that changes the entire vibe of the session. Let’s talk about that summer sunset glowww also?!

Summer engagement sessions also tend to feel more relaxed emotionally. The wedding is still far enough away that there’s no pressure, but close enough that it feels real. You’re past the initial chaos of getting engaged and deep into dreaming. That’s a really good season to be photographed in.

Let’s Talk Timing

When couples ask me about summer engagement photos, the question I get most is “What time of day should we begin our session?”

In summer, I typically recommend starting engagement sessions about 90 minutes before sunset.

That timing gives us:

  • Softer light as the sun begins to lower
  • Time to move naturally without rushing
  • Space for you to relax into the session instead of feeling “on” immediately

We don’t need to chase golden hour the entire time. What we’re really doing is letting the light change slowly as the session unfolds. That gradual shift makes photos feel dimensional and natural, not forced or overly styled.

Grace and Will’s session benefited from exactly that. We weren’t sprinting from spot to spot. We were walking, talking, pausing, and letting the environment do what it does best.

Why Hotel Hartness Works So Well for Summer Engagement Photos

Hotel Hartness is one of those properties that just shines in summer. Bright light doesn’t overwhelm it. Heat doesn’t make it feel chaotic. There is lots of shade from trees and foliage. There are indoor spots that feel cozy and calm. And the architecture of the location itself can’t be beat.

There’s enough variety that your gallery doesn’t feel repetitive, but everything still flows together.

What I especially love about Hotel Hartness in summer is how it handles daylight. The tones are neutral. The spaces feel open. You don’t need dramatic shadows or moody skies for the location to feel elevated.

Location Highlights at Hotel Hartness

One of the reasons I recommend Hotel Hartness so often for engagement sessions is because it offers multiple looks in one place, which is ideal for summer.

Some of my favorite areas on the property include:

  • The architectural lines and walkways that give an editorial, modern feel
  • Open green spaces that soften the gallery and add movement
  • Neutral backdrops that keep the focus on the couple, not the setting

Because everything is walkable and cohesive, the session never feels fragmented. You’re not getting in and out of cars. You’re not breaking the rhythm of the time together. That matters more than most people realize.

Making Your Engagement Session Feel Like an Experience

One thing I always encourage couples, especially those planning summer engagement photos, is to treat the session like an experience, not another wedding planning box to check off.

Hotel Hartness makes that easy.

Make it a total event by staying onsite which allows you to:

  • Get ready without rushing
  • Transition straight into photos
  • Slow down afterward instead of immediately jumping back into real life

You can have dinner on property after your session for date night at Patterson. Or enjoy a quiet moment with a massage at Spa H. Downtown Greenville is also a short drive from the property, making it easy to explore if you’re visiting for the first time.

As a Greenville native, I would love to curate your entire engagement session experience for you!

A Note for Holiday Engagement Couples

If you got engaged over the holidays and are wondering if summer engagement photos are “too late,” the answer is: absolutely not.

There’s no rule that engagement photos have to happen immediately. What matters is that they happen in a way that feels right for you. When you’re present, settled, and able to enjoy it. And my vote is summer engagement photos all day, every day.

Grace and Will’s engagement session is proof of that.

If you’re planning summer engagement photos and are drawn to locations that feel elevated, relaxed, and experience-driven, Hotel Hartness is an incredible option.

And if you want your engagement session to feel less like a photoshoot and more like a meaningful pause in the middle of planning, I’d walk alongside you and capture this special season of engagement for you.
