There are surprise proposals, and then there are surprise proposals.

When Nived reached out about proposing to Macey during her girls’ trip to Charleston, he had a pretty incredible plan: fly in from Chicago without her knowing, bring their dog Georgie along for the surprise, meet her at Isle of Palms after a girls’ spa day, and then whisk her away on a sunset sail.

Macey thought she was simply enjoying a girls’ getaway in Charleston. But when she walked onto Isle of Palms Beach and found Nived waiting for her at the end of the girls trip… She was shocked! After the proposal, the surprises continued with a sunset sail to end the evening.

Charleston is an especially good proposal destination because you can build an entire weekend around the moment. You can spend the morning exploring downtown, have lunch somewhere beautiful, relax at the beach, and then plan the proposal around sunset.

Isle of Palms Beach

For couples who want that classic coastal South Carolina feel, Isle of Palms is one of my favorite options. The wide beach, ocean, dunes, and gorgeous evening light make it incredibly photogenic. And it’s a super dog-friendly beach if you are bringing along your four-legged friend!

For even more privacy, I recommend Sullivans Island which is not super far away. Dog permits are required here, and there are a few more restrictions.

A Sunset Sail

If you want to do something a little more unexpected, a private sailboat proposal is hard to beat.

Charleston’s harbor gives you incredible views of the city skyline, bridges and surrounding waterways, and sunset makes the whole experience even better. You can propose on board, plan a surprise after getting out on the water, or, like Macey and Nived, make the proposal one part of a larger surprise.

My personal favorite company who is super gracious with professional photos is Blue Life Charters. Some local charter options include Charleston Sailboat Charters, Charleston Sailing Charters LLC Yachts Fate, Serendipity, Kismet, Mystique and Southern Charm and Charleston Sailing Adventures.

And if you want photographs from the water, tell your captain and photographer ahead of time. Coordination is what makes the drone images possible, but they are never a guarantee.

Where to Stay in Charleston

If you’re traveling into Charleston for your proposal, I’d recommend making a weekend of it rather than flying in and out for one night.

For a luxury downtown stay, Hotel Bennett is a beautiful option right in the heart of the historic district. If you want something boutique and design-forward, Grand Bohemian Charleston, The Cooper or Hotel Emeline are worth looking at.

Bringing your dog? Charleston is surprisingly welcoming to four-legged travelers. Hotel Bennett is pet-friendly and even offers a dog bed and special swag for your pup.

For a more resort-style getaway, Wild Dunes on Isle of Palms or The Sanctuary on Kiawah Island offer multiple accommodations, a spa, dining and plenty of ways to turn the proposal into a full vacation.

Where to Have Your Proposal Dinner

Naturally, after pulling off a surprise proposal, you’re going to want a really good dinner.

Charleston is not short on romantic restaurants. For an elevated dinner, I’d look at places like Magnolia’s downtown or Obstinate Daughter at Sullivans Island. If you’re looking for something a little more fun and different, Felix has a great downtown location and Tempest is so fun!

And honestly, don’t overlook the waterfront. Charleston’s harbor and surrounding islands make sunset an event all on its own.
