In today’s episode, we’re talking all about strategic model calls: how to use them intentionally to shift your portfolio, explore new directions, and reignite your love for what you do.

…was filled with a lot of travels! One such location we explored was one of my favorite cities, Washington DC. In fact, I had not visited this city since 2016, and my husband had NEVER been to our nation’s capital. So…
I signed up for a shoot crawl at the Daughters of the American Revolution Constitution Hall (can we say gorgeous?!). And we made the trek up to DC, visiting some Greenville friends who had moved there recently along the way.
Because I would LOVE to break into the DC market, I wanted to make the most of my trip by lining up an engagement shoot while I was there. I published a post asking for an engaged couple who may be interested in a free session (aka a model call!) and vetted the applicants. What resulted was the most GORGEOUS sunrise session at the Jefferson Memorial.
It was tranquil, with not a soul around, giving us a beautiful straight on view of the Washington Monument just beyond the Potomac. I had a pinch me moment right then and there, with sleepy eyes but a FULL heart.
Because what I realized is actually pretty profound…
I don’t have to wait for people to book me in a location I’m dying to shoot in.
I don’t even have to wait until someone finds me to be able to book my ideal client… yeah, let that one sink in.
And today, we’re continuing our mini coaching series with a topic I teach on in my mastermind program. I urge my students to offer free, strategic sessions to help them:
Oftentimes, we build our businesses first by offering free shoots. In fact, we might give too much away and feel burnt out. But after several years in, we can tend to feel “too good” for giving things away for free.
I want to reframe your thinking. No, we are not handing out free sessions left and right. We are offering strategic, curated styled sessions that really align with our brand. These are well thought out, intentional and highly selective.
And I’m walking you through my process for strategic sessions (or model calls!) on the podcast today. Let’s boost your bookings with model calls!
This is one of the most popular topics inside the Photography Business Mastermind, and for good reason. We break down:
